Introduction
Problem-solving is at the heart of what it means to be a Business Analyst (BA). This skill is crucial in navigating the complexities of projects and organisational challenges. In this blog, I’ll share some effective problem-solving techniques that have been invaluable in my BA career.
1. Root Cause Analysis
Technique: Identifying the root cause of a problem, not just its symptoms.
Application: I often use the “5 Whys” method. By asking “why” multiple times, you can uncover the underlying cause of a problem. The Business Analyst School Membership Platform offers a great explanation of this technique via an on demand video.
2. Brainstorming Sessions
Technique: Collaborative idea generation to find solutions.
Implementation: Regular brainstorming sessions with my team have led to creative and effective solutions. Tools like Miro offer virtual whiteboards for team brainstorming.
3. SWOT Analysis
Technique: Analysing Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats related to a problem.
Application: I use SWOT analysis to evaluate project challenges and identify strategic opportunities. Canva provides templates for visually organizing SWOT analyses.
4. Flowcharts and Diagrams
Technique: Using visual aids to map out and analyse processes.
Example: Creating flowcharts to visualise a process often reveals inefficiencies and bottlenecks. Lucidchart is a great tool for creating these diagrams.
5. Hypothesis Testing
Technique: Forming hypotheses based on available data and testing them.
Application: For data-related problems, I formulate hypotheses and validate them using data analysis techniques. Platforms like Kaggle provide resources and datasets for practice.
6. Seeking External Insights
Technique: Consulting external experts or mentors for fresh perspectives.
Implementation: Joining BA communities such as BAS and IIBA allows me to seek advice from experienced professionals.
Conclusion
Effective problem-solving as a BA requires a mix of analytical thinking, creativity, and strategic planning. By employing these techniques, BAs can navigate through complex challenges and devise innovative solutions. Remember, the key is to remain adaptable and continually refine your problem-solving toolkit.
